Liver Transplant

A liver transplant is a surgical procedure to replace a diseased or damaged liver with a healthy one. It's a life-saving option for individuals with end-stage liver disease or acute liver failure where medical treatments have failed. The healthy liver can come from a deceased donor (brain-dead or recently passed away) or a living donor who donates a portion of their liver. The liver's remarkable ability to regenerate helps both the donor and recipient recover.

When is a Liver Transplant Needed?
• End-Stage Liver Disease (ESLD): This includes conditions like cirrhosis, where the liver is severely scarred and unable to function properly.
• Acute Liver Failure: This is a rapid loss of liver function, often due to complications from medications or other illnesses.
• Specific Diseases: Some rare disorders like urea cycle disorders and familial hypercholesterolemia can also necessitate a liver transplant.

Types of Liver Transplants:
• Deceased Donor Transplant: The donor is deceased, and the entire liver is transplanted.
• Living Donor Transplant: A portion of a healthy liver is taken from a living donor (usually a family member) and transplanted. The liver has regenerative properties, allowing both the donor and recipient to recover.

Success and Risks:
• Liver transplants have a high success rate, with many patients living normal, healthy lives.
• However, risks include infection, bleeding, and rejection of the new liver, requiring lifelong immunosuppressant medication.
